2012 - #6 - Aghadowey Stadium - 31/3/12 |
The plan for the weekend was to go to Ballymena Raceway on Friday night and then probably Kirkistown for the race meeting on Saturday, they fitting in with various web work and graphics that still need to be finished off, and should have been weeks ago. As plans go it all seemed very simple, play indoor football from 6 to 7 then head to Ballymena late and I should be there about 7.40, probably somewhere in the middle of the first set of heats. In reality, no one was on after us at indoor and that went on to 7.20, we got tanked and I wasn’t in great form, I phoned ahead and heard there wasn’t a great turnout of F2’s and NHRs (not surprising since Nutts Corner is on today) and I decided to opt for my local chippy and feet up on front of the tele, and that set the tone for one of those “can’t be bothered weekends”. I thought about going to Kirkistown but didn’t bother, and so that meant I’d be able to head up to Aghadowey with Team Beggs since the Lightning Rods were on and he’d room for one more.
I hadn’t been to an “in season” meeting at Aghadowey yet, but after not getting there in it’s first two seasons of racing I’ve now made it to three meetings on the trot, admittedly as Nuttscorner/ Tullyroan Oval and Ballymena get into full flight, it is unlikely I’ll be making too many trips to Aghadowey, it’s a long return trip from Carrick.
There was 10 1600 Lightning Rods on track for heat 1, won by #77 (apologies, I’ve no programme to know who anyone was, it’s in Beggs’ van), #5 took heat 2 and ’25 took the final (I think, I was in the pits at that stage). I was quite disappointed in the Open Hot Rods turn out of 4 cars, but given that the National Hot Rods were out the night before and the day after I think it’s little surprise none of them wanted to play in the Open class. Davy Gurney took the opening heat, #697 took heat 2 and Gurney was gifted the win in the final with #697 stopping as they crossed the line with one lap to go with a burst of flame from under the bonnet.
The new Open Banger rules allowed a few ex National Banger cars out to play and there was 3 Team Buckle cars racing and a Jag, a Bomb Squad car and a few other Volvos. Kieran McIvor took the final win.
The Lightning Rods had the biggest turnout of the night, with fourteen cars, #949 won heat one with Tim Hazelett taking heat two and Richard Stewart took the honours in an incident packed final.
Approx Car Turnout: 37 cars (1600 LR 11, Bangers 8, Open Hot Rods 4, ORC Lightning Rods 14)
