2012 - #11 - Nuttscorner Oval - 22/4/12
So that's it then, the end of an era at Nuttscorner, for me anyway, a trip to see the Tooz on the brown stuff next weekend will keep me away from the last meeting at Nuttscorner as Nuttscorner Oval, so for me it's no more trips to what is effectively my local track. It's going to be strange not passing the same cars and the same landmarks on the way up the road, not getting caught up behind the McKees on the last road out, not looking into Nesbitt's yard on the way through Mallusk to see what is sitting about, and quite frankly it's going to be a mainly motorway drive for me and boring as ....! I know I can't continue forever to devote the hours I currently do to the sport, so only time will tell how long I'll stick at it, being involved has it's benefits but as my boss once told me, it's much easier to be a nobody that a somebody.

Throughout the week the forecast from Sunday was poor at best, one day midweek I checked the BBC website and it said heavy showers, looking for something more optimistic I then checked a google weather app and it showed “heavy showers – Chance of storms”, so to get through the day relatively dry was a huge bonus.
Shamwreck itself needs no introduction, the biggest banger meeting on this island this year, nothing else comes close. A great field of cars, some fantastic tin, some huge hits and a few breath taking moments.
Team Buckle had a larger than usual team, The Bears had a smaller than usual team, which was very quickly one lighter in the first heat and the Condoms made what you’d probably call their first proper team entry to Shamwreck, the Levellers and the Last Rites, also had a good turnout. Mike Flaherty or 'Fagass' won the best presented award for a superbly turned out, Chrysler Windsor according to the badges on it, and circa early 60's after a little research on google. On the track Darren Nash won the opening heat which seen a big roll for one of the big yanks at the meeting in the hands of Danny Poynton. Heat two was won by Kieran McIvor who was then savaged by a Bear after the flag, while the final itself went to World Champion Shane Davies who even had time to follow in a parked car. Nutty Nige of the Bears took the prize for entertainer of the day.

In the other classes, starting with the Lightning Rods, there was heat wins for David Hearst and Andrew Percy after the second heat was taken back a lap, before one of the races of the day as the Lightning Rods struggled for grip on a wet and greasy track. The final had multiple leaders and all sorts of antics as the drivers looked to struggle to keep it pointing the right way, British champion Brendan McConnell was the eventual winner after Stephen Emerson, who was first across the line, was docked for contact on Richard Stewart when taking the lead.

In the 2 Litre’s there was Garry Campbell took the opening heat win, Bradley Dynes was first across the line in heat two, but judged to have jumped the start, thus promoting Lee McCracken to the win, before he was excluded for using an unregistered tyre giving the race win to Adam Hylands. The final seen a lights to flag victory for Adam Heatrick who was under the close scrutiny of Hylands for much of the race.

Jay Jay McConaghie took a hat trick of wins in the Robins, but the biggest talking point was Anthony McIvor's attempt on a last bender in the final, from way too far back he had an attempted lunge at McConaghie and missed, ending with the car spectacularly going roof first into the pit gate post, completely destroying the car and giving us all one of those moments where you stand about silent just hoping your going to see the driver move, thankfully he got out unscathed, but looking at the car you tend to wonder how.

Total Car Turnout: 91 cars (National Bangers 42, 2.0 Hot Rods 21, Lightning Rods 21, Robins 7)
