2013 - #13 – Lochgelly (HRP) – 27/4/13 |
First “overseas” trip of the season this year, and as per the last few years, it was off to Scotland. As soon as I heard the National Hot Rod European was being run at Lochgelly I was on looking at sailings and trying to get myself an infield spot, there is a good chance I even had my accommodation booked the same day as it was announced. The trip then spiralled a little and went from me going on my own in the car, to myself, Darren Black, Emma Hammond and Jonny Teggart going, not in the car, but in a Woolsey van with Jake’s Ninja Kart on board, and so, not for the first time I’ve been on a roadtrip to Scotland with a single seater on board.
It’s hard to beat a good roadtrip, and this one was a good one.
In something of a rarity these days, a lot of Hot Rod drivers came off the boat and turned left, which must have seemed a little unnatural. I thought having been to Lochgelly before that I knew what to expect when we got there, but I was quite blown away by the improvements that have gone on over the winter. The pits and garages/ scrutineering bay wouldn’t be out of place at a circuit, the new café wouldn’t look out of place on the high street and Race control had more screens up than the scene in the background of the BBC news, to be honest, I’d quite like my office to look like that and have a view over a stockcar track and if it did, I don’t think I’d be home very often.
On the track every race over the weekend was a good one, and our cars weren’t far away at any time. In the Ninja Karts Adam McFall took the opening heat win and Jake Woolsey won the final. Wayne Woolsey was (in my opinion, harshly) docked in the opening heat which gave him a second place, but he went on to take the final on the Saturday night with Adam Hylands Second.
In the Nationals Keith Martin won the second heat, in which NI cars filled the top 5 places. Andrew Murray put his car on the front row for the final, only to end up what can only be described as demolished on the back straight in the final. Chris Haird won the European Championship itself with Keith Martin second and Adam Maxwell third.
Also on the race card were the Superstox, which impressed me in their turnout, I think they must have been in the low 20’s car turnout wise, which must be on a par with F2 in Scotland at the minute and only in their third season back.
