2013 - #15 – Ballymena Raceway – 3/5/13 |
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, when I look down the Ballymena fixture list to try and decide which meetings I’m going to do, the stand out meetings for me are the ones with National Hot Rods and F2’s and the real stand out meetings are the nights both classes are on, really at that point I’m fine with just seeing 6 races anything above that is a bonus. It’s worth also mentioning that this is now something of a unique event to Ballymena, no one else over here can run Nationals and F2’s on the same night.
This was a business as usual Friday night for me, indoor football until 7 o’clock then a drive up the road to arrive at Ballymena a few races in. I’ve now it sussed that a stockcar race should take around 15 minutes to run, so I should be there when the second race is on track or at latest the third race, and true enough, I was there when the second race was starting, although frustratingly I knew when I got out of the car it was F2’s on track.
This was one of those meetings full of wee quirky things that were just nice to see, for example, it was good to see Chris Gordon get a win in the Stock Rods, it’s not an easy feat from the back as world champion. It was good to see Gavin Fegan back out in the F2s and it was good to see Sim (Simon Kennedy) getting a win in the Nationals, that must have been the fulfilling of a boyhood ambition, him taking a final win must have been the icing on the cake, and no doubt the next dream will be Ipswich?
On the track Sam McKay took both heats in the F2’s with Chris Kincaid taking the final, and I’m pleased to report that there was a lot more bumper work than there was in their previous outing at Ballymena.
In the Gp 2’s, Lyle Murray took heat one, Freddie Fleck took heat two and Stewart Nicholl won the final.
The Nationals, as their qualifying draws to a close and it all becomes very interesting in the points, seen a heat win for John Christie with Simon Kennedy taking heat 2 and the final.
In the Stock Rods the opening heat went to Steven O’Kane, Chris Gordon won heat two and the final went to visiting Tipperary driver Colm O’Sullivan.
Approx Car Turnout: 46 cars (8 F2’s, 13 National Hot Rods, 7 Stock Rods, 18 Gp 2’s)
