Being a photographer at our local tracks creates an element of commitment to being “there” when there is racing on. Being “there” prevents me from being anywhere else and somewhat restricts travelling to the weekends that there is no racing at home, and so a few days away in York and a trip to Stoke was planned..... but it didn’t work out like that.

I decided before I went away that Birmingham was as looking as good a bet on the Saturday night as Stoke, as much as I enjoy Shale racing, F1’s and Ministox looked like a better bet that Bangers to be accompanying F2’s on the bill, then I seen the name “Rob Speak” on the Birmingham booking list on Thursday and that was a done deal, Birmingham it was to be.

The BriSCA ministox possibly stole the show if I’m being honest, their third heat featured a great scrap for second place for several laps and their final was a battle between several drivers for pretty much the entire race. Lady racers Faye Smith and Courtney Finniken placed one-two in the final with Charlie Sworder in third. A lot of F2 (in my opinion) these days has become the fast man hits the slow man, the fast man drives past and the slow man is too far behind to hit back by the next corner, so it was refreshing to see some proper ding dong battles in the Ministox, trading blows and places lap after lap after lap.

In the F2’s, Birmingham was almost a one make series of RCE’s, Yellow grader Luke Grench took heat one and the final. Jack Aldridge took heat two after Chris Mikula was docked for jumping a restart. World Champion Micky Brennan took heat three and Ben Lockwood won the Grand National after Mikula again was docked for a jump start on a restart. The Grand National finished with a superb last bend hit from Micky Brennan which put Michael Green and I think Kelvyn Whalley around the wall.

It was probably the only time this season I’ll get to see the F1’s, and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as you hear fanfare for the common man played as the revs start to rise and the flag drops when the F1 races start.

Danny Wainman led Rob Speak home in the opening heat and the final. Gareth O’Beirne took heat two and Jamie Jackson took heat three. The Grand National went to Ed Neachell.

So there we have it, an away day at an all BriSCA meeting, how times have changed that this is somewhat of a rarity for me these days!
