2013 - #19 – Tullyroan Oval – 25/5/13
Sometimes when I go to write my blog pieces after the racing I find I have to pause and think about how it will be interpreted by the reader. As I’ve often said your opinion, or anyone’s opinion on a Stockcar meeting or any other form of entertainment for that matter is very much a personal experience, on the wettest most miserable of nights someone is going to have the result of their lives and on a sunny night with packed grids and fantastic racing someone else is going to be miserable that the car broke down in practice. Therefore when I’ve “one of those meetings” I need to remember when I write a piece on the racing, to try and report on the racing and the positives, and on the nights the racing is poor we’ll still try and find some positives from that too, less time editing photos or something.
From that alone, hopefully you get the idea that I’d one of those nights, which followed “one of those weeks”, in no way aided by arriving later than I’d hoped to and not getting anything to eat before the meeting because the burger van initially wasn’t there and when it did arrive, I thought I’d wait for the queue to reduce, unfortunately it didn’t and my poor wife had to stand there for THREE full races getting my dinner. I’d be most grateful if anyone from the Loughgall area could point me in the direction of a good local chippy and I’ll get fed en route in future.
On the track it was a big night for the National Hot Rods, and they got a good grid of cars for it, 16 cars racing and Clive Richardson practised, but didn’t race would have been 17. Needless to say as things are so tight to qualify for the world it was all quite tense and a little rough looking at times. Up front Terry Maxwell took all three races, with some frantic action and battling going on behind. The points remain tight and we’re poised for a cracking night of racing at Ballymena on Friday night, I do hope the places are won and lost through racing means and not down to an engine blow up, a tyre or a backmarker. It’s also worth mentioning that last outing for the gold roof at Tullyroan, hopefully Glenn or another of our drivers can bring it back later in the year.
On the topic of Gold roofs, Stuart Gilchrist took a heat and final win in the Superstox and the opening round of the NIOvalTV series. It’s great to see visiting drivers over, and it’s always great to turn up at a meeting and see the World Champion there, no matter who the World Champion is, where the meeting is or what the fixture is, the World champion is always a draw in my mind. As well as “Gilky”, David Frame was an additional visiting driver from Lochgelly, and great to see him over too. The other heat win in the Superstox went the way of Nathan Beattie in only his second meeting.
The Bangers opened with a Ladies race which was won by Haley Bevan racing Keith Carey’s car. When the men took to the track it was Steven Reynolds who won the King of Krash and the allcomes and Stevo McGrath won the Destruction Derby.
The Reliant Robins had an eventful night with several roll overs, Jamie White won both heats before rolling out of the final when a wheel came off, Billy McClean won the final when the race was stopped for one of the most spectacular rolls I’ve seen in a Robin when Lisa Seeds rolled on the exit of turn 2.
Like the Nationals, the Stock Rods had a fairly rough night (now I write that it’s leading me to think there could be a trend, was everyone else hungry and fed up?). Colin McNeice took the opening heat, Ben McCully took heat two and it was Jonny Cardwell who took the honours in the final.
After a challenging night at the racing, some good news followed, Rob Speak - F2 British Champion, Legend, enough said.
All eyes now turn to Ballymena on Friday night, it should be a cracker.
Approx Car Turnout: 63 cars (11 Superstox, 9 Reliant Robins, 16 National Hot Rods, 12 Stock Rods, 15 National Bangers)
