2013 - #32 - Tullyroan Oval - 27/7/13
After weeks of working on posters, artworks and the programme the Summer Speedweekend had finally arrived. One of the biggest and most anticipated weekends of racing in the local oval racing calendar. Cut grass, fresh paint, and the tyres out of the road on the infield are amongst the things that make the Speedweekend special for me, if you can’t get good shots with that combination, you shouldn’t have a camera!

As ever the speedweekend was filled with memorable moments, talking points, surprises, big grids of cars, visiting drivers and great racing.

Starting with the Superstox, they raced for the Moffett family shield, which was won by Denver Grattan, after Gary Chambers had taken both heats and despatched Neil Davison into the wall, probably the first time a Superstox had been put round the wall in Tullyroan, which is long overdue.

Billy McClean won all three Robins races, I think and Ivor Greenwood took a heat and final in the Legends cars demo with Raymond Harper taking the other heat. It was interesting to see the Legends cars around Tullyroan, but I think it would take a lot more of them to hold my attention at a meeting the calibre of the Speedweekend, it was a good chance for me to grab a bite to eat.

The Lightning Rod qualifying heats seen wins for Winston Weir and Jordan Rochford, but it was Brendan McConnell who’d got the results to put the car on pole for Sunday.
In the Stock Rods there was heat wins for Derek McMillan and Tipperary visitor Colm O’Sullivan before Stephen McNiece won the final.

The 2 Litre British Championship qualifying heats seen an opening heat win for Stephen Emerson, before Shane Murray took heat two. The third of the heats was probably the most memorable and maybe surprising, Gareth Thompson pulled quite a drive out of the bag to take the win, he’d started pole and having lost the lead I’d expected he’d slip down the order, but no, he fought back and took the lead and held it to take a well deserved win, at the time it was probably the drive of the weekend, only to be eclipsed by what was about to happen in the ProStocks.

The ProStocks ran a ⅔ format for their Irish Open Championship, Ryan Abernethy won the first two heats with Davy Wright the winner in the third. Abernethy started from pole for the final with Thomas Agnew alongside, the first bend was chaos and “Gremlin” dropped like a stone down the order in the opening laps, while Stefan McClelland hit the front and started to get away. As the race progressed and aided by stoppages and backmarkers “Gremlin” made his way back up to second and was within striking distance of McClelland as the cars went onto the last lap, he collected the 99 car on the way down the straight and they both went across the grass and tangled into turn one, at that point it looked like anything could happen, either one could get the edge out of the bend, or they could as easily end up sitting there with their race finished, but they made it out of the bend and Abernethy just had enough of a lead to be out of striking distance in the last bend, and took the win, in for me what was the race of the weekend..... again!

Racing done, it was off down the road buzzing about the ProStock Irish which had finished the meeting, time to recharge batteries, clear memory cards and get a bit of sleep before doing it all again on Sunday......
