2013 - #33 - Tullyroan Oval - 28/7/13 |
The second day of the Speedweekend and it was always going to take something to upstage the ProStocks Irish Open on Saturday night, and the same class nearly pulled it off again.
As ever on the Sunday of the Speedweekend it began with the now traditional parade lap.
The Juniors opened the meeting with what was turning into a bit of an endurance race with half the field ending ups sitting on the infield by the end of it. Edmund Davis took the opening heat win. The second heat went the way of Bradley McKinstry, and it was the two heat winners who locked horns in the final. A shower had left the track slippy and McKinstry led onto the last lap, David tried to go up the inside and was blocked off in turns one and two, he then opted for the outside in turns three and four and had edged into the lead on the exit of the turn, but was punted wide by the understeering McKinstry car, pushing Davis into the wall and giving McKinstry a marginal win at the line. Following a stewards enquiry the win was awarded to Davis.
The Ninja Karts were the second batch of youngsters out on track with one of their best turn outs to date. Niall Cregan won the opening heat and Matthew Nicholl won heat two. I was quite surprised in the final to see so many karts out on slicks on a wet track, but I’m no tyre choice expert. Adam McFall worked his way to the front before spinning on turn two, Matthew Nicholl then took up the lead and took the win ahead of Cregan, incidentally both out on wets.
In the hope of getting a few good banger shots on the one meeting a year you don’t have to shoot through tyres, I stayed on the infield for the opening heat and nothing at all happened at my end. Heat two I returned to the NIOvalTV perch and loan behold everything happened at the end I’d been at for heat one. Heat two and the final where a bit of a free for all, and rules didn’t appear to count for much. The team event was won by the South team.
Not surprisingly the ProStocks were down on numbers from the Saturday night. Mark Kingham and Karl Smyth won the heat before another epic final. With Smyth hitting the front early on, Finnegan, Litter and McClelland set about a fantastic battle for second place, with the three cars trading places lap after lap, Smyth at that point had the race wrapped up, but this is ProStock racing and a late yellow flag cut his lead. On the restart McClelland broke from the other pair and chased down Smyth, spinning him and taking the lead with a few laps to go. McClelland took the win Smyth second and Ryan Flemming third.
Of the championships on the Sunday it was the Lightning Rods that took to the stage first. Brendan McConnell qualified on pole with Jordan Rochford alongside on the front row, Richard Stewart and Winston Weir occupied row two with Gary Beggs and Ben McKee on row three. Rochford got the better start off the front row and led the opening lap, but his lead was short lived and McConnell was soon through and into the lead. Once out front McConnell was largely unchallenged and took a comfortable win, Richard Stewart got into second in the closing stages with Rochford having to settle for third.
Rochford went on to take the win in the support race.
The 2 Litre British followed the Lightning Rods with Shane Murray and Wayne Woolsey on the front row. Woolsey attempted early on to go around Murray, but it wasn’t to be. Murray took a comfortable win to secure his third consecutive British Championship, with Woolsey picking up second and Adam Heatrick third after penalties given to Adam Hylands and Stephen Emerson who had finished ahead on the road.
Jason Wilks and Adam Hylands won the 2 Litre support races.
Normally this would be the bit where I say that is the Speedweekend done for this season, but with the ProStocks World Cup, Lightning Rod World Championship and Superstox Irish Open in September, it’ll be another weekend not to be missed, hopefully we’ll get the weather too!
