2013 - #34 - Mendips Raceway - 4/8/13 |
Thursday - Sunny and warm, Friday - Sunny and warm, Saturday - Sunny and warm ….. Sunday - Wet, cold, horrible, miserable, not quite the vision I had of lying on the bank in the baking heat of a hot mid summer’s afternoon at Bristol when i booked the trip. Due to photography commitments at Tullyroan and the reduced number of F2 meetings at Ballymena, I haven’t seen much of the F2’s this season, but every now and again I remember I’m still a F2 fan at heart and head off in the pursuit of F2 racing.
I’ve only been to one F2 semi final meeting before, at Hednesford a few years ago, and on that occasion I was lucky enough to be getting to photo a few F2 races, which means a lot of running about, so this was the first F2 semi I’ve been able to stand back with my arms folded and enjoy, well I say with my arms folded, but that caused a puddle against my coat and it leaked, so I’d my hands in my pockets, which were also filling with water.
Semi 1 was definitely the more star studded of the two, Bradbury, Goldin, Moodie, Burgoyne, Brennan, Wagner amongst the contenders. Bradbury cruised to a comfortable victory while Sam Wagner took second after a dice with Burgoyne who placed third with Moodie fourth. Goldin and Brennan the two big scalps to fall in the semi, although you’d expect them to cruise through the consolation, it’ll mean coming through the world from a long way back.
Semi 2 proved to be the better watch of the 2 in my opinion. Rob Speak and George MacMillan on the front row with Dave Polley will down the grid. Speak made the better start and broke away from MacMillan only for an early stoppage for a big pile up on the back straight to group them back together, Polley by this stage was well through the field and up into the top six (I think). The restart went much the same way, Speak got away and built up a lead, Polley continued to move up through the field. The closing laps MacMillan caught and passed Speak and got far enough into the next bend to be out of striking distance, but chaos amongst backmarkers on the back straight on the last lap allowed Speak to sneak through as cars went all directions and he took the win with MacMillan second and Polley up to third.
After the semis there was 2 pretty good consolation races, with Neil Hooper and Barry Goldin the big names making their way through to the final.
The final itself could well be a dressed rehearsal for the world final with Speak and Bradbury exchanging places and hits, Speak coming out on top and taking third place to put semi 2 on the inside for the world final. Nathan Maidment won the final.
The heavens opened again for the Grand National which was won by Chris Bradbury.
Roll on Taunton.
