Been There, Done That…. Bought the T-shirt? - Part 2
There is a long list of things I’d like to do and see in local oval racing, and in fact in Oval racing in general, some of it is beyond my control, such as I’d love to see a class get to the stage it needs split heats and qualifying for the final, the way F1’s, F2’s and Saloons do at well supported meetings, I’d love to see a day when the F1’s grace the tracks in NI, I’d love to see a major championships return to NI for open wheeled classes, be it Superstox or F2’s. It would be great to see big screens up around the racing like you see at Grand Prixs of major sporting events, for now I’d even settle for a scoreboard like Ipswich but then again the time might come when you can do that through an app on your phone with a live feed from the mylaps.

While the Superstox have brought new hope of open wheeled major championships returning to the province, the rest remains a pipe dream that would take something special to make it happen.

The amount of things I’d like to achieve myself is running out though, I think through the websites I’ve been involved in I’ve done alright at improving awareness of the sport and raising the profile of NI within the sport. A few years ago after there was no official DVD of the last 2 Litre world staged in NI, we looked at doing DVD’s and NIOvalTV was born, since that we’ve brought in products not previously available in NI, such as Wheelspin magazine and the wee F1 cars that have proved popular.

A T-shirt was something I’d always fancied doing for local racing and Jonny was in total agreement that it was something NIOvalTV should give a go. Up until the start of the season I didn’t believe it had ever been done before, and sods law we’d no sooner rubber stamped the idea and Team Buckle produced their Shamwreck T-shirt, by which stage we’d the wheels in motion to produce the Speedweekend T-shirt.
At the minute the two people in Oval Racing who are producing the best vector graphics are Stu Stretton and Clive Marchant, although the A1 Teamwear are doing some nice stuff at the minute too. I’ve worked with Clive in the past for Spedeworth stuff, so he was the obvious first choice when it came to seeking an artist to produce the artwork, and thankfully he was happy to oblige and I think most people will agree he’s done a great job.
It’s fair to say everyone involved is quite proud in what we’ve managed to produce, and surely it’s a collectors piece with being the first T-shirt for an NI Speedweekend, it may even be the first t-shirt for the 2 Litre Hot Rod World final.
The one thing we haven’t proved particularly good at in the past however is guessing what stock we need to bring in, by trying to keep the T-shirt at a sensible price (£15) we aren’t making a huge margin, so we can’t afford to go crazy and bring in massive numbers of each size without running the risk of losing, but at the same time we don’t want to disappoint people either by not selling out the sizes, so if you want a T-shirt we would suggest you contact myself or NIOvalTV and ask for the sizes you want to be set aside, we’ve less than 5 t-shirts in most sizes. If you want the alternative design without the girls on the back of it, we need your order by Wednesday night as we’ve only produced these as an alternative design for requests.
