Two Finals and a Heat win for Grattan at Aghadowey
It’s not often a driver comes away from a meeting with double final win and a heat, but that was the case at Aghadowey on Friday 8th of August as Gary Grattan won the previously postponed Superstox King of Aghadowey final and went on to win the meeting final, the third round of the NIOvalTV Series.

In recent years I’ve missed round 1 of the National Hot Rods World Series due to being at a tractor run, but due to an oversight when we were planning the NIOvalTV series, we accidentally chose Friday night, so I somewhat felt obliged to be there and caught up with the family stuff on Saturday night instead, lesson learnt.

While on the subject of the Nationals World Series NI, it this season has a very generous prize package put together by PC Paints and Components with the top point scorer in each round receiving a tyre, the series is a lot of rounds, so that is a lot of tyres.

In recent years I’ve got off to a bumpy start with the NHR’s I seem to miss a lot of the early rounds and then get to every round after Christmas, as much as I’d like to break the trend and do all the rounds, I’ve also decided that domestic meetings in a weekend is too much so I’ll be missing a few again.

The National numbers have crept up again which is great to see, it’s good to see Gary Woolsey back in the local series, it would be great to see Davy McCall and Clive Richardson back in regular action too, I suppose time will tell if that will happen.

The Aghadowey meeting was marred by quite a heavy shower that made the home straight resemble something of a boating lake, which took out several Nationals including Adam and Tommy Maxwell who had built up quite a lead in the horrendous conditions, when the race was declared it was Gary Woolsey who was in the lead and got the win. Heat two went to Derek Martin before Glenn Bell took the final win with a great drive around the outside in the closing laps. John Christie was the top point scorer on the night taking the PC Tyre.

The Superstox were a little down in numbers, Billy Finnegan has joined the ranks in the ex Gavin Fegan car and took a third place in both the King of Aghadowey final and the meeting final. Gary Grattan took all three wins with Denver Grattan second in all three.

The second heats cancelled after a lengthy delay to get the waterlogged track drained and safe to race on again. Jordan Rochford took the heat and final in the Lightning Rods, Ricky Shaw won the Thunder Rod final and Drew McKeown won the Junior Productions.

The heavy shower may have spoiled what may have been a decent nights racing, but it made for some decent photos, in the bizarre wet but bright conditions, I’ve concluded I enjoy taking photos in the rain, I just don’t like the getting wet bit, it’s going to require some thought to figure out a solution to this.
