McNeice Emerson and Gilky Take Titles at Aghadowey
The opening day of the DMC September Speedweekend took place at Aghadowey Oval on Saturday. The evenings racing was headlined by the Stock Rods European Championship, Superstox Irish Open, 2 Litre Hot Rod Irish Open as well as the qualifying heats for the National Hot Rod British Championship.

While NI has quite a history of splitting championships across multiple venues, I’m normally not a huge fan of it, to me it creates an almost disjointed speedweekend, but on the other hand if you’re trying to attract drivers and spectators from across the water it’s a great chance to visit two tracks in one weekend. For some reason this weekend seemed different and it did feel a bit more like a proper speedweekend.

The pits at Aghadowey was extended on Saturday night and it was still packed with cars and every race had full grids of cars and I don’t recall any poor races throughout the night.
In the National Hot Rod qualifying Robert McDonald won the opening heat, Stewart Doak took heat two and Shane Bland won the third and final heat, for me the move of the three races was in the closing stages of the third heat when Adam Maxwell found a gap between Chris Haird ahead of him and Mikey Godfrey that the pair where coming round to lap.

The Stock Rod European Championship heats seen wins for Jonny Cardwell and Derek McMillan which put Cardwell on pole with Gary Butler on the front row for the final. The final had a pretty manic opening few laps in which Butler and Cardwell muscled each other for the lead and allowed Marc Morrell up the inside and into the lead where he settled before a puncture ended his chances and seen him slip backwards and into retirement. Stephen McNeice took up the running and went on to take the win leading home Chris Gordon and Gary Butler.

The Superstox raced for their Irish open championship and were in fine form, I think starting with twenty eight cars in the opening race. Denver Grattan won the opening heat before Stuart Gilchrist took heat two, dispatching Nick Roots into the wall in the closing stages. Gilchrist took pole for the final with Denver Grattan alongside. Gilchrist was on a league of his own and took a comfortable enough win with David Frame second and Kyle Beattie the first local finisher home in third.

In the 2 Litre Hot Rods the championship win which has been coming for Stephen Emerson has finally arrived. He took pole for the final and drove a flawless race to take the win. Earlier in the evening Wayne Woolsey had won the opening race and Joel Richardson had won heat two, but it was Emerson and Shane Murray’s results that put them on the front row for the final. Emerson took a lights to flag but most eyes were on Adam Hylands as he made his way through the pack from a lowly qualifying position following a spin in heat one. Hylands finished second on the track but had made contact with Shane Murray on his way to taking second, spinning the world champion and gaining Hylands a black cross and a two place docking which promoted Wayne Woolsey to second and Joel Richardson to third.

In the Ninja Karts there was two heat wins for Adam McFall. McFall and Nicholl were dicing for the lead of the final when they collided which handed the lead to Callum Magill who had to fend of the advances of Aaron Ward in the closing stages to take the win.

The Lightning Rods completed the line up, Jordan Rochford took a heat and final double with Gary Beggs winning the other heat. Nigel Jackson was runner up in the final with Winston Weir third.
