Cardwell and Cochrane on top in Double Irish
There seems to be a strange culture creeping into Irish Championships that I’m not a huge fan of. Up until recent years the Irish was the big night of the season for any class and almost everyone who’d raced all season was out in it, you could expect big fields of cars and you would probably have nearly every registered driver out in it. That draw seems to have been lost somehow in recent years and the Irish championship grid isn’t as big as the grid you get for a series final. Both the Stock Rods and Lightning Rods have had bigger grids of cars at domestic meetings this season and it was a bit disappointing to see the numbers down for what should be their big event of the year. Going into the meeting I wouldn’t have looked past Rochford, Jackson or Weir to take the honours in the Lightning Rods, but when the three of them collided in one bend it was Scott Cochrane who took up the race lead and went on to take a well deserved win with Feargal McNally second and Vince Litter third. I doubt anyone would have predicted that result, so that by itself shows you that if you’re on the track you’ve a chance of bringing how a trophy and hopefully it’ll inspire more drivers to come out for their Irish Championships. The Stock rods were slightly more predictable with Jonny Cardwell taking a lights to flag win to claim the Irish championship. In my view the best racing of the night came from the 2 Litre Hot Rods, but possibly at a cost of having a fair amount of damage to cars a week ahead of their own Irish Championship. Sean Dynes took the opening heat win, Stuart Cochrane took heat two and Stephen Emerson took the final win in what looked like it could easily have become another final with himself and brother Mervyn driving side beside for the win.
