Much in Store for local Open Wheel fans in 2015!
On several occasions over the past few years I’ve sat down to write a comparison between Superstox and F2’s, but it’s quite a controversial thing and I know there is those who would read it that I was knocking one class or the other and more would be made out of it than is actually intended, it is after all quite a hot topic at the minute that people feel quite passionately about which is a good thing.

Over the past few years Superstox have been on the rise, I believe Superstox in Scotland are now on a par or better than F2 numbers at a regular meeting where not that long ago there simply was no Superstox in Scotland (unless you go back further again). In 2014 NI was the same, the average attendance of Superstox meetings in NI I gather to be higher than that of the F2’s, although I think they fielded identical numbers for the Irish closed championship, if it wasn’t identical I think it was 1 car either way, I had noted it, but I’ve lost my notes.

There are pros and cons of each class and each has a rich heritage. I gather Superstox are cheaper to run over a season than F2’s with a lot of the saving being on tyres, while when you look at the positives of F2s they have proper speedweekends, Superstox simply don’t have an equivalent to Skegness or Northampton.
Some will say if you win the Superstox World final that it’s not the same as winning the F2 world, but then again if you win the F2 world is it the same as winning the F1 world?
I think rather than nit pick through comparing the detail of the classes I’ll summarize with this, it doesn’t matter if the cars on track on front of you are Superstox, F2’s, Outlaw F2’s, Modstox, whatever else there is of a similar nature, if they are getting good numbers and putting on good action then it doesn’t really matter, The supers had a really good season in NI in 2014, but how can you argue with the entertainment value of the F2 Irish, won by a driver who started at the front was spun and had to come back through the field to win it, simple answer is you can’t.

If, like me, you’re into open wheeled racing then 2015 should be a treat, the Superstox World final comes to NI for only the second time, the last time it was here was in 1992 when it was staged at Ballymena and won by Ian McKnight. The Superstox World if one of the oldest major championships in oval racing, first run in 1961 and it should be seen as quite a coup to see it being held in NI for only it’s second time. For many (myself included) it’ll be the first time they’ve seen an open wheeled World title staged here, certainly for me the biggest I’ve seen was the F2 European which I think off hand was 22 years ago at Nutts Corner. Regardless of how you rate Superstox against F2s, it’s unlikely the F2 World will ever be staged anywhere but the UK mainland, we don’t have F1’s and the same would apply even if we did, so that makes the Superstox world undisputed as the biggest “Stox” championship the province is ever likely to stage, I wouldn’t see us hosting the NHR world anytime soon, so you could argue it makes it the biggest championship that is likely to be staged in the province.

The Superstox come off the back of a good season in 2014, I’m sure a few more people will join the ranks of the class, hopefully we’ll get the odd visitor throughout the season and then the World final will be well supported by visiting drivers, I’d actually love to see it that well supported that we’ve enough cars to run a support meeting with drivers needing to qualify for the meeting final (just like an F2 world).

Open wheeled racing isn’t all about Superstox in 2015 though, it’s going to be an exciting year in F2 too. 10 years on from winning the F2 European Championship Graham Fegan is making a return to the class in 2015. Junior Production graduates Bradley McKinstry and Graham Fegan Junior look set to also join the ranks of F2, both with strong family connections in the class and both should be worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses. Gordy McKee is making the switch from Lightning Rods to F2’s and is also a very capable driver. It’s certainly good to see new blood going into the F2’s, especially when form in the rod classes here suggests that the numbers swell in the class with the major championship in the province, which would be Superstox.

Whether you’re a Superstox of F2 fan I’m sure you’ll be at the big meetings for both, and I’m equally sure neither will disappoint.
