F2s steal the show at Ballymena Opener |
While much talk beforehand seemed to be about how many stock rods and Nationals there would be at the opening Ballymena meeting, it was the F2’s that stole the show at the opening meeting of the season at Ballymena Raceway.
Good Friday and the local season is kicked off with a traditional Stock Rod Fixture at Ballymena, the first of three throughout the weekend. I now play indoor football with work colleagues on a Friday night (again) and it now doesn’t finish until 7.30, which as you can imagine makes it quite a task to be at the racing for 7.15. It’s a simple case of trying to fit too much in to too short a time, but you’re a long time dead and I’d rather go watch half a stockcar meeting than the sh….. that’s on TV these days, but for 2015 I’m playing Friday nights by ear and will decide meeting by meeting if I’m going.
In recent years the F2s have been hit and miss at Ballymena, one week they’d have double figures the next could be five or six cars and there’d the a big hit in the first bend of each race and that would be the end of it. Sixteen cars took to the track on Friday night and put on a good show with bumpers flying in and a great scrap between Graham Fegan and Chris Kincaid which looks like it could run for a while. Craig McConnell won all three races.
The big talking point in the nationals will have been a big shunt in which Ben McKee ended up in the wall at the start of the back straight and was collected by Keith Martin, both cars looked in quite a state. Nigel McCauley won the final.
The ORCi Stock Rods had a decent grid of cars and Steven McKane won the final. It really doesn’t matter to me how many stock rods race where, the simple matter is there would be more if they all raced together, I don’t like the split.
