Gunner Makes it a Double Irish |
Chris “Gunner” Lattka made it a double Irish this weekend in the Stock Rods when he added the Stock Rods Irish Open Championship title at Aghadowey today (yes, I’m doing a report on the same day as the meeting, like old times!) to the Irish Masters title he won at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday
There was an element of Deja vu surrounding the Easter Monday meeting at Aghadowey as it had the same sort of feel as the opening meeting last year, good weather, good racing, big crowd, decent buzz about the place. For me the Stock Rods headlined the meeting since it was their championship, for others it was the Nationals and if you were there on the back of what you’d seen on TV last week then it was the Ninja Karts topping the bill.
As with the previous meeting this year there was good fields of nicely turned out cars with some nice new tin and some nice new signs.
Results wise, Micky McFall (that’s Adam’s dad if you’re a TV fan) and Willie Taggart shared the Stock Rod heats before Lattka led home “Shuv-On” Martin to a Scottish one-two in the final. Derek McMillan was third.
In the Nationals there was a heat and final double for Adam Hylands who fended off Glenn Bell in the closing laps of the final while Gary Woolsey won the other heat.
The Ninja Karts had an opening head win for Stewart Hanna, heat two went to Sam McNiece and the final went to Shea Fegan who very nearly came together with Adam McFall on the closing lap. The final had a bit of controversy, which I was trying to avoid getting into this season, but after 4 meetings I’m struggling, on a stoppage three of the front runners continued at race pace after the red flags were flown, this is something which has bugged the hell out of me since we introduced the class and finally, today, those who did it were put to the back. I’m sure this didn’t go down well with the parents, but safety is paramount and if someone did it in a senior class they’d likely be having a few weeks off to think about it, when there is marshalls or paramedics needing to attend to someone then it’s no place for karts whizzing round, furthermore it drains the life clean out of me waiting 10 minutes for a class to be regridded after everyone gets out of order because karts went on after the flags come out, and no one should be on a track that doesn’t know what a red flag means.
In the Thunder Rods there was a final win for Norman Purdy and it was local racer Aaron Stewart who took the win in the Lightning Rods.
