May Day At Aghadowey |
There seems to have been some sort of switch over in the weather, I don’t want to scud it, but we’ve now had three dry meetings out of three at Aghadowey this season, which I believe is more than we managed all last season, while Tullyroan been mounting a challenge to be known as the wet and miserable venue this season so far. I suppose it being T-shirt weather at Lochgelly on the Saturday of the recent Speedweekend there should have been a sign that all is not normal with the weather.
There is something about Bank holiday meetings at Aghadowey that bring a bit more of a crowd and atmosphere and add an extra edge to the days racing.
If I was to pick a highlight of the day it would be the ProStocks final, it was one of the best races of the season so far, Stephen McCready and James Goldie broke away from the pack and swapped places throughout the race with McCready taking the win after a drag to the line following a last bend hit, it was one of those races the lead pair looked equally matched and you favoured the person in second going into the last bend would likely come away with the win. While they battled up front there was also battles for second and some good squabbles right down the order.
In the Superstox Denver Grattan charged through the field and looked on course to take a comfortable final win as he caught Jordan Robinson with a few laps to go, but Robinson had other ideas and came back at Grattan and put in a good account of himself to fight back for the lead, something which has been missing in recent meetings as the field has become a little too polite to the star men coming through. Denver did take the win, Gary Grattan took second after a hit on Robinson in the last bend, but it was a good final.
The Thunder Rods too dished up a cracking final, lap after lap the field bunched up and bunched up more until chaos reigned and half of them ended up on the infield. Karl Smyth was first across the line, but docked, which gave the win to Andrew McLean.
Vince Litter and Mark Corry has some unsavory moments in the opening laps of the Lightning Rod first heat, which seen the pair loaded and made it all feel much more Aghadowey like. Richard Stewart won the final, I was in the NIOvalTV cart providing coffee break relief, I couldn’t tell you much about the final.
Shea Duff took a hat trick of wins in the Junior Productions, Matthew Nicholl made his debut in the class, but suffered with electrical gremlins throughout the day, but I’m sure will be one to watch in future.
Tam Agnew won the bus DD.
