Hylands Hat-trick as Winter Continues
It’s perhaps fitting that the National Hot Rod World series that started with perhaps the wettest Hot Rod race ever also came to a close on another miserable night at Tullyroan, in conditions definitely less fitting with the end of May. While the conditions were pretty grim to photo in, they did produce some good racing.

The Nationals went into the night with points title and the final place at this year’s world final still to play for, although it was going to take results to fall favourable for Carl Sloan. Sloan started off the front of the yellow grade with McCurdy who he was chasing starting mid pack of the reds and it looked like he could pull some points back in heat one. That wasn’t to be however as Sloan was the first to slip up in the conditions and was soon facing the wrong way in turn four with most of the pack going around him, including McCurdy. Hylands took the win, Sloan’s misfortune confirmed put him out of reach of the cars ahead and Glenn Bell did enough to secure the NI Points title.
Hylands went on to take heat two and the final. Sloan’s misfortune continued as he suffered an engine fire at the start of the final, but perhaps better the way it feel than had it been the crunch race to make it to Ipswich. Bell and Christie had a great dice in the final, spending several laps side by side.

The ProStocks threw up the talking point of the night, heat two seen Steven Haugh putting James Litter around the wall in the borrowed Tam Agnew car. Pay back came in the final when Steven Haugh was leading the race and was walled by Litter having just lapped him, Alan Haugh then hit Litters car as it sat in the wall. It may be a headache for all concerned and officials, but it’s hard to beat a good feud and a focal point in a class and it keeps people coming back. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of it.
Results wise, credit goes to Liam McShane who won both heats which included a great drive in heat one to scrap and hold off Conor McElmeel. The final went to Raymond Gurney who completed a rare treble win for the white graders, which is quite a feat when the final wasn’t a “highest point scorer to pole” start.

In the Lightning Rods there was an opening heat win for Nigel Jackson with Alastair Stewart winning the second heat. Jamie Stephens looked to have the final in the back but caught traffic in the closing laps which allowed Stewart to catch up and challenge for the lead, as the pair diced for the lead a late yellow flag came out and Stewart was removed from the race with a silencer issue. With backmarkers between Stephens and the second place man Scott Cochrane it gave Stephens a bit of a cushion and he went on to take the win.

Gareth Halliday won a heat and final double in the Juniors with Shea Duff winning the first heat. John Stewart won a heat and final double in the Robins after Sammy Graham won the opener.
