Great racing at Aghadowey, Shame so few seen it |
If you were outside oval racing and looked in you might be forgiven for thinking the sport is thriving, surely it must be, there is a big car show on the doorstep of two of the tracks and no one felt the need to go and promote the racing at it, and it’s following must so healthy you can run two meetings at the same time and both will pull a crowd….. except that isn’t the case.
Most of my trip to Aghadowey was spent trying to decide if I was mad not to have gone to Nutts Corner, but having missed Ballymena the previous night due to other commitments, it felt like I’d already missed part one of a trilogy, what’s missing another part of it and therefore going where I’m an official photographer is probably the right call.
I had anticipated there wouldn’t be a great crowd, anyone into contact racing I’d expected to be at Nutts Corner, anyone into Hot Rods I expected would be at Ipswich for the Thunder 500 and for anyone big into Banger racing Kings Lynn was the place to be. The crowd was actually larger than I expected, but still probably one of the smallest since Aghadowey re-opened.
On track though the racing was second to none and possibly one of the better meetings of the season.
Scott Hosie was unlucky not to hold onto the lead in the opening Ninja Kart races, but when first over the line Jack Hazelett was later loaded up it have Scott his first win, and that dice for the lead had set the tone for the night. Ninja Karts heat two was another cracker, this time it was Jay Clyde who led home a group of four or five karts all contesting the lead. It seemed unlikely that heat two would be outdone, but it was Sam McNiece and Adam McFall battled each other all the way through the field exchanging places as they went with the pair crossing the line with only half a kart length between them it was McFall who took the win.
Robert McIlroy won the Thunder Rods King of Aghadowey but the highlight of their evening was the finish of heat two which was as close to a dead heat as you’re ever likely to see with Karl Smyth judged to have taken the win on the line from Mark Boyd.
Mark McCambridge seemed an unlikely final winner in the Lightning Rods but having won the second heat he went on to hold off some of the more fancied runners in class to take the win in another cracking final.
A week on from their world final the Stock Rods were in action and were action packed throughout the night. Willie Taggart had a roll in the opening heat. Marc Morrell won the final by a comfortable distance, but there was good scraps down the field, most notable being Gary Butler and Jonny Cardwell who diced for 2nd
The best however was saved to last with a cracking 2 Litre final and Adam Hylands going around the outside of several cars in the closing laps to take the spoils.
While our wee sport may not have the fanbase to sustain a decent crowd at two meetings at once and the crowd looked well down at Aghadowey, I don’t think there can be anyone coming away from the meeting disappointed in the quality of the racing they seen. If I was a spectator I’d no doubt have chosen one of the other meetings, but I came away glad I’d see the meeting at Aghadowey.
