1995 F2 British Championship
1995 – ebay was born, Robson & Jerome topped the charts with Unchained Melody, Blackburn won the Premier League, Arsenal broke the British Transfer record paying 7.5m for Marc Bergkamp, South Africa won the Rugby World Cup and Northern Ireland last hosted a major championship for the F2's.
Back in the 80’s and 90’s major championships had been a more common thing in Northern Ireland with Portadown and Nutts Corner both having staged the European and the British Championship. In 1991 Willie McGaffin even became the only Northern Ireland driver to have won the British title on the mainland when he fended of a certain Rob Speak to take the title at Buxton.
In 1995 Nutts Corner staged the British Championship for the F2’s, names like Speak, Sworder, Batten, Finniken made the trip and made up part of the 24 strong field of visitors who came to race with the locals, although a different generation from the coming weekend it was familiar names such as Fegan, McCrory and McKinstry they’d have raced against.
Back then it didn’t seem like we’d have to wait as long to see a major championship on our shores again, even when I started NIF2 in 2001 I was thinking we must be due a major in the next year or two, but the European becoming rooted to Northampton (which is a very good weekend) and the World being on a rota meant the British became the biggest championship we’d likely see on our shores.
From what I’ve seen and heard of the F2’s this season they’ve been on fine form and if the booking list lives up to it’s expectation that this season’s F2 British and Irish open are sure to be the best there has been in some time. Let’s just hope it’s not another 21 years before we get another major championship here.
I’d been looking for coverage, pics, reports on it of late to try and put a blog piece and thankfully Colin Adair was able to find a report written by John Wolsey in August 95’s Short Circuit and Crispen Rosevear was able to help with a report from Stoxworld.
